First Florida graduate of McDonald’s Archways of Opportunity

Jenny Escobar

Jenny Escobar

Columbia native Jenny Escobar immigrated to the U.S. when she was 15. Her first job was with McDonald’s in Miami, where she started as crew and worked her way up, eventually being promoted to her current People Manager position.

Being a young mom of two, Escobar did not have time to finish high school with work and family as her priorities.

When McDonald’s new Archways to Opportunity Career Online High School program was introduced earlier this year, Escobar decided to achieve one her goals – earn a high school diploma.

Escobar will graduate with her high school diploma through this innovative program on October 28. She is the first McDonald’s Archways to Opportunity graduate in Florida.

“I left school prematurely, and never found the right time to return,” Escobar says. “Going back to school was something I always knew I wanted to do as an example for my children and co-workers, but could never quite find the time. Thanks to McDonald’s and the Archways to Opportunity program, I received my high school diploma through the Smart Horizons Career Online High School.

Archways to Opportunity is a comprehensive educational program that helps McDonald’s workers learn English-language skills, earn a high school diploma, and progress to an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree. This new program is free to McDonald’s managers and crew in all 14,000 company owned and franchised U.S. restaurants.

“We are so proud of Jenny for not only completing the program but becoming the first Florida graduate,” said Isa Rodriguez, the local McDonald’s franchise owner who has employed Escobar since 2001. “We truly believe in helping our employees achieve their dreams. This is just one of the many programs that McDonald’s offers to help us educate and support our employees.”

Now that Escobar has received her high school diploma, she will have the opportunity to pursue her next goal – a college degree – also with tuition assistance from the Archways to Opportunity program.

“Now that I have achieved this goal, I am looking forward to continuing my education and one day graduating from a University.”
